Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in patients over age 50. With this condition, deterioration occurs in the central area of vision.
There are two general types of ARMD. In the "dry" form, vision loss occurs gradually. Yellowish deposits (drusen) often appear. "Wet" ARMD can cause sudden vision loss. Abnormal vessels grow beneath the retina, leaking blood and fluid. If left untreated, irreversible damage may occur.
