Patient Education

The physicians of The Retina Institute specialize in medical and surgical problems with the eye.  Our goal is to provide our patients with the best education possible to better assist with the early diagnosis and treatment of any potential sight-threatening conditions.

Make sure to see your eye care professional on a regular basis.  Many ocular diseases can begin painless and be asymptomatic.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in patients over age 50. With this condition, deterioration occurs in the  central area of vision.

There are two general types of ARMD. In the "dry" form, vision loss occurs gradually. Yellowish deposits (drusen) often appear.  "Wet" ARMD can cause sudden vision loss. Abnormal vessels grow beneath the retina, leaking blood and fluid.  If left untreated, irreversible damage may occur.
